Joey Ross- Intro

Hi guys, my name is Joey Ross and I am a sophomore here at IC. I am a sport media major and to be  honest the main reason I took the Jews in the Modern World course was to fulfill my History Requirement for my major. However, while searching through the history classes, this one instantly struck me as the most interesting. As I mentioned in class, I visited Israel this summer on birthright and it really changed my mindset on Judaism. I definitely have become more eager to learn much more about my religion and the past events involving the Jews and Jewish History. Now a little bit about myself.. I am a very outgoing person who loves to have a good time. I am a big time sports fan, and truly believe  that I am the biggest Knick fan on campus! I love spending a lot of time with my family and friends being active. Additionally, I play on the basketball team here at IC and hope to be a major contributor this season. Everyone come to the games! lol

What is the "millet system"?
The Millet system in an Islamic Law which was put into place in The Ottoman Empire. Basically, what the policy did was recognize the Jews and Christians as separate nations. Both of theses separate nations who were minorities were held responsible for its own welfare system, schools, along with praying in their own synagogues or churches. Despite the Turks of the Ottoman Empire being Muslim, they never forced their religious practices or ideals onto the Jews or Christians. Religious practices was one of the main freedoms that the Millet System had. All in all, The Millet system was a key component of Ottoman rule that helped to maintain peace between the Muslim communities and the Jewish  and Christian minorities.
