My name is Jorey Rekoon, and I am a senior Communication Management and Design major, with a concentration in Corporate Communication, and a minor in legal studies. One of my many interests is traveling, which I was able to do a lot of as I was abroad last Spring of 2013 at the Ithaca College London Center, which was an unbelievable experience. I traveled to numerous places in Europe, one of my favorites was Amsterdam, where I was able to tour the Anne Frank House. I look forward to discussing that once we begin to talk about the Holocaust. I thought that taking this class would be entertaining as well as informing about my jewish heritage. Besides Hebrew School when I was younger, I have no formal education on my Jewish Heritage, so I am interested to see how this class will play out.
The “Millet System was a policy put in place by the Ottoman Empire, in which led to the creation of Jews and Christians being recognized as a separate nation. This nation was labeled as “millet” and this gave Jews and Christians to have religious and legal independence. This policy was put in place to help maintain peace between Muslim and Non-Muslim communities. Each respective religion was able to individually control their own religious and legal matters. They were able to have their own synagogues, schools, and so on. Each “millet” was able to have separate courts and different government systems, so each religion could govern their own society. Personally, I believe that the Millet system was successful in what they wanted to achieve.
