Questions for class 10/25

Question 2.

In Northern Africa in Islamic territory backlash against the rabbis as backwards and obstructionists was not acceptable. The governing body of the land also did not step into what the Jewish community was doing. What I find most interesting is that with the modernization in Europe, the governing body stopped accepting the rulings made within Jewish courts.  Of course back in the middle ages if there was a scenario or situation involving only Jews and needed to be brought to court, it could be settled within the Jewish courts, and the governing body of the country/kingdom would accept that ruling. Now as the world progresses forward they stripped the rabbis and the Jewish court of their judicial power by not accepting their rulings. This alone incorporated the Jewish community more into the community of its country, because they had to abide by national law as a normal citizen, they couldn't just go to jewish court.

Also, as rabbis couldn't make money off the torah they had to have other jobs to make a living. This trend did not catch on as the world modernized, schools got better, and more professions opened up. Less people wanted to take on the study to be a rabbi only to have to find another job.
