WWI had a large affect on where Jews were allowed to live. The Pale of Settlement stated that no new Jews were allowed to enter Imperial Russia but the ones that already lived there were allowed to stay. Jews who no longer wanted to live in Russia fled to Galicia. The Jews were told to stay neutral in the conflict between Ukraine and Poland which many Jews did.

The trades that Jews mostly concentrated in were leather, textiles, bankers, clothing and shoe making. The professions that Jews were particularly favored in were Lawyers (51% in Budapest), Physicians (61% in Cracow) and Doctors (63% Vienna).
