1. German Jews began to come to the US in large numbers from the 1830s onwards, resulting in an immigration of about 200,000. Why did they leave Germany and how did they make a living once they arrived in America?
The German Jews left Germany and came to America to find new agricultural possibilities, and because they valued the American political and social opportunities. Back in Germany, Jews were faced with Political oppression. Jews were limited in which professions they were allowed to chose, as well as being limited in terms of marriage, requiring an opening in the Matrikel. This is a roster, that when there are openings, only then are the Jews allowed to get married. When the male Germans came to America, they came mainly as peddlers. The families often worked labor positions in family owned stores. Male and Female Jews often sold many foods, particularly dried goods, making up a good potion of their income.
My Questions:
1. Why was Leo Frank lynched, and why did the story make it seem like people were trying to intercept the body from resting in peace?
2. If both the Germans and the Russians had different views, why did they both essential come to America to do the same things? I.E Jobs, Religious activities, etc.
